Immersed in Culture

The islands here are still inhabited by many of the Flores sub ethic peoples who preserved their traditional ways of life. Many villages partake in local crafts and food production, including traditional textiles (Ikat) and palm wine and spirit (tuak and sopi).

Witnessing their traditional fishing techniques is also a highlight. Fishermen free-dive to the depths to spear-fish or to check their woven bamboo fishing baskets (The Bubu), wearing the most ingenious handcrafted wooden goggles; while local children free-dive to depth to play in divers’ bubbles.

Many of these traditions can be experienced by visiting one of our local villages, or by simply witnessing the local fisherman whilst out diving or snorkling. With their big smiles they happily provide fabulous photographic opportunities.

Explore Surroundings

Coastal surroundings of our resort are quiet and inviting to take a stroll on the beach. The beautiful mangrove trees at low tide are not to be missed and at periodically very low tides, our house reef discovers its tidal pools, where you can find lots of amazing little critters: juvenile eels and an array of other juvenile fish and critters, blue ring octopus, ghost pipefish, multitude of crabs and shrimps…

Nearby villages to the north and south are accessible by beach at low tide or by following the track behind the resort for some impressive scenery views. There are no coffee shops or restaurants in the village, but be prepared for a nice experience full of genuine smiles, “hello mister-s” and “photo photo-s”.

Local craft boutique

In our little store we display local crafts that we sell without commission, to support the local economy. Local fabric (named ikat) weaved by the women of close by communities and wooden goggles used by the fishermen can make a great locally sourced and authentic gift.
